Fashion Friday

This week I have been wearing a version of this outfit nearly every day. It started a couple of weeks ago when I found this amazing faux leather moto jacket at Forever 21.
It's definitely pleather and should probably be kept away from an open flame, but it is remarkably soft and very real looking. The one I got has gold zippers and a leopard lining (I love me some leopard lining!) The one that is still available online is shown with silver zippers.
It fits perfectly and..wait for it...it was only $47.80!!
It's one of those rare instances that Forever 21 comes through. Check out your local 21, it may still be in store.

1. Hat, Nordstrom. $34.00
2.  Fake Ray Bans. Get real ones here.
3.  Cabble knit sweater, Massimo Dutti. $118.00.
4.  Infinity scarf, Nordstrom $48.00. Can not have enough scarves.
5.  Chocolate Cakes nail polish, Essie. A rich dark chocolate brown. $8.50.
6.  Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey. A favourite colour of mine. $19.00.
7.  I love these boots; waterproof, super comfortable and warm. I can wear them for hours.
Le Canadienne Galaxy suede boot. $335.00.
8.  I have this bracelet and get so many compliments on it. Only $22.00! At RW and Co.
9.  The bargain of the winter! $47.80 at Forever 21.
10. On the pricy side, but so versatile because the band snaps off for easy changing. I have an older
model that I wear all the time with either a black or cream band. Lots of bands to collect.
      Links of London. $695.00.

It's pouring rain here and the temperatures are dropping which means either an ice storm or a wicked snow dump. I just got in the door from an epic last minute trip to Costco. I have never seen such bad traffic, EVER! The whole city is gridlocked...the combination of Friday/bad weather/last day of school and the usual last minute Christmas rush have combined to make things crazy.
I am all ready for the storm with a kitchen full of food, presents to be wrapped and cookies to be baked.
What are you doing this weekend?

Tiny London Kitchen Renovation

It has been ages and ages since I have done a post on...
I found this kitchen before and after over on Design Sponge and fell in love with it for it's tiny proportions and because it has my favourite and black and white colour combination.
The tiny alcove kitchen gets a fun and frugal makeover and gains tons of character, more storage and new appliances.
The dated avocado cupboards are switched out for gorgeous black lacquered door fronts and the dingy floor and wall tiles are replaced with classic white and black tiles.

The kitchen in this 1930's flat had last been renovated in the 1960's.

Pretty Pink Christmas

I love that designer Jessica Kelly decks her Toronto row house with decorations in neutral tones of silver, cream and white, punctuated with unconventional bursts of bright fuchsia. The home is so pretty and feminine and each room is full of great little details.

Notice the antique brackets under the counter, the brass faucet and those silver bowls filled with paperwhites.

I love this salvaged antique door that Jessica made into a mirror.

The marble shelf is a great idea if you don't have room for a buffet.

Jessica made the console under the window from old barn board and then topped it with marble.

A few of my favourite things...mercury glass, twinkle lights and candles.

Have a great day everyone!

Winter Fashion Looks

To make dressing easy I usually have a few go-to looks that are simple to throw on and fairly practical for the cold weather and I hope a little bit stylish too. I find it so much easier to dress in the winter than in the warmer months. All I need are a few coats, lots of scarves and of course a good pair of boots.
Here are a few outfits that I have been wearing and loving lately.
Get shopping...a few things are on sale!

1. Tippi Sweater: I have lots of these in different colours, a wardrobe staple.
On sale right now at J. Crew on line.

2. One of my favourite recent purchases: $119.00 at Zara. Love the detailing on this little jacket.

3. Burberry scarf: A splurge, but I wear this scarf with everything.
Look-a-like on sale here.

4. I love this plaid QMack blouse, silky and light weight, perfect for layering under sweaters. On it's own it is see-through, looks good with a black tank under it.
On sale right now at Macy's. Regular price $97, now $30!! Run, don't walk and get on line! That's in Canadian dollars, so it's even less in US dollars! I bought mine in Boston a couple of week ago and have been wearing it non-stop.

5. Basic black scarf: Banana Republic.

6. The most comfortable boot. I am a serious boot wearer and basically never take them off until spring. I own these in the sport sole version, from last year, and the version above in black and also in brown. If you are looking for a very slim style check them out here.

7. The Gap Skinny Jean: An inexpensive skinny with just the right amount of stretch. On sale right now.

What are you wearing? Do you have a winter "uniform"?

Boston Cupcake Tour

I didn't start out to do a cupcake tour of Boston, it just sort of happened.
Boston and cupcakes are not synonymous.
Boston and pubs or Boston and Italian sandwiches or Boston and clam chowder go together. Oh, and of course Boston and beans and Boston and cream pies, but not Boston and cupcakes!

It all started when I was lured in by an adorable shop front that was just around the corner from the hotel. Isn't it cute? Love the sign and those little pink trees.

Sweet is located in the Downtown district at 11 School St.

We decided to keep it old school and go with the classics, a double vanilla and a double chocolate.
They were both excellent.
I love that they sell minis because smaller is just cuter.

Also there is something about the cake to frosting ratio that is so much better on small cupcakes.
Not to mention the small size allows for more variety.
Both cakes were moist, but not too moist. I don't like my cake to be overly moist because it reminds me of a cake mix.
The crumb was good and consistent, but not too fine. (another trait of a mix)
The frosting was good too, very buttery and not too sweet. The vanilla had real Madagascar vanilla in it that you could definitely taste.
My only regret is not going back to try more flavours.
For the holidays they have Butterscotch, Snowball, Candy Cane and Gingerbread cupcakes.

Next we headed across the street to Cakeology

Cakeology is conveniently located about 10 steps away from Sweet.
Here we went all crazy and ordered 4 cupcakes.

They were all really good!

The top left is the Vanilla Vanilla with Tahitian vanilla bean frosting and white chocolate curls.
Top right is German Chocolate with coconut, carmel and pecan frosting.
Then we have the Chocolate Mint topped with mint frosting and a Junior Mint and then last, but not least the Peanut Butter and Jelly cupcake.
All the cakes were moist and tender with a good structure. (Not too moist)
Each little cupcake packed a flavour punch. They were all very tasty and not too sweet.
The Peanut Butter and Jelly tasted just like a peanut butter sandwich and the German Chocolate icing was amazing, almost like fudge.

We then headed across the Common to Beacon Hill and as we were touring the charming Charles Street, I spied Isabelle's Curly Cakes.

Probably at this point a normal person would just keep walking, but I thought: I have come this far on the cupcake journey what's one more?
Unfortunately they didn't have any minis.
I went with what I thought was the Vanilla Bean, filled with pastry cream and topped with buttercream frosting.
But, now that I look at the photo the icing looks pink?
Could it have possibly been a Strawberry Vanilla? Oh well, maybe I was in a diabetic coma and blacked out.
I do remember that there was too much icing, but the cake was really buttery and dense, just like my momma makes!
And it came in a cute little cupcake "suitcase".

Ok, now this is when things get serious. On the next day we toured my absolute favourite part of Boston, The North End Italian area.
There are so many amazing Italian places to eat that it is nearly impossible to choose.

After eating the best antipasto ever with a side of meat balls and with of course massive quantities of bread (and a diet Coke for good measure) we had no intentions of carrying on with the cupcake tour....but, as we rolled ourselves out of the restaurant this is what we saw...Lulu's Sweet Shoppe.

Before we entered we made a pact that we would only try 1 mini and if they didn't have minis we would walk away...well...hello cupcakes...come to mamma!

I stole this photo from their site.

Here's what we had, a Chocolate Vanilla.
The cake was good with a rich chocolate taste, but a little too moist for me. The icing was not too sweet and had a yummy butter and vanilla taste.

And that concludes the Boston Cupcake Tour!
Next on the agenda...The Boston Italian Sandwich Tour.

Now I am off to the gym. HELP, I hate the gym.

P.S. Here's the killer antipasto. Forgot to take a pic of da meat da balls!
Yes, that's olive oil in each cheese and meat "cup".
